Christmas Card Placemats.....December 2000

Recently we received a request for Projects in which items are recycled for a creative purpose.  This project uses Christmas Cards you have received, for your own originally designed Christmas Placemats. Great project idea for Adults or Do it with Children! Materials Needed:   Poster Board, 11" x 14" or 8 1/2" x 11" Christmas Cards (Lots) Contact Paper Glue Stick Scissors Markers & Colored Paper (optional) Gather up as many assorted Christmas cards as you can. (you will want lots)  Go through the cards and pick a theme/style based on items on the cards or whole sections of your cards. Cut out pieces from your cards. (Now its time to get creative.)  Create a new design by arranging the pieces on your poster board.  (If you want you can put a name on the placemat.  Or add pieces of colored paper to complete the scene.) When you have your placemat design finished, glue all the pieces in place. Let glue dry.  Cut two pieces of contact paper that are 1 inch larger than the poster board on all sides.  Carefully place the contact paper over the top of the placemat.  (*Hint: Only peel back the paper backing from half of the contact paper.  Center the contact paper over the placemat and press the center down first, then press it on toward the edge. Then peel back the other side and press it on starting in the center and pressing toward the edge.) Do the same with the contact paper for the back.  Then trim the excess down to about 1/4inch from the poster paper. All Done!  *Idea: Do a whole set of personalized placemats for a Christmas Party or Dinner!
