Materials Needed:
  • Wood Pieces (all with holes)
    • 16 mm round bead (head)
    • 1/2" x 3/4" oval bead (body)
    • 1/2" x 5/8" spools (legs & hat)
    • 9/16" oval beads (arms)
  • Thin cardboard
  • Star Template - (see below)
  • Raffia strands
  • Tiny piece of white batting or white imitation fur fabric. (beard)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Small paint brush
  • Glitter glue
  • Plain napkin rings
  • Black fine point pen
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun

How to make the Uncle Sam Napkin Ring:

  1. Paint all the pieces for the body as shown with stars and stripes. Let dry.
  2. Take 2 strands of raffia and tie a knot at one end. Tie the knot over again until it is large enough that it will not slip through the holes in your wooden spools.
  3. Thread two spools onto the raffia strands and slide them down to the knot.
  4. Repeat this process for the other leg.
  5. Next, thread all four strands of raffia through the larger oval bead (body) and slide the bead down to meet the spools (legs).
  6. To make the arms, take one of the four strands of raffia and thread 2 of the smaller oval beads onto it.
  7. Slide the beads to the end of the raffia strand to meet the large oval bead (body).
  8. Tie a knot in the raffia strand at the end of the second arm bead. You will need to tie this knot a few times so that it will be a large enough knot to keep from slipping through the hole in the small oval beads.
  9. Repeat steps 5-7 above for the other arm.
  10. Thread the last two strands of raffia through the round bead (head) and slide the bead to meet the large oval bead (body)
  11. Thread the raffia stands through that last spool (hat) and slide the bead to meet the round bead (head).
  12. Tie a knot in the raffia strands at the top of the spool (hat) to secure the body. Again, make sure that you tie the knot enough times to keep it from slipping into the hole in the bead.
  13. Trim the ends of the raffia strands so that 1/4" is sticking out beyond the knots.
  14. Using your hot glue gun, glue a tiny piece of white fur or batting to Uncle Sam's chin.

Done!
These uncle sam napkin ring crafts will make your patriotic table setting something to remember.
